Obama Pursuing Gun Controls

Obama is considering executive action against gun rights, one of the most important political issues. The right to bear arms is a sign of a free man, because it gives him the ability to defend himself, a necessary balance of power.

As the US becomes increasingly “Blue State”, either Blues will need to be won over to gun rights, or the federal government is going to continue to push harder. It would be difficult to fully remove guns from the US, because there are so many in Mexico and already so many in the US. If Obama truly wants to harm whatever remains of Middle America, he should tax ammo.

In Switzerland, the army has recommended that citizens arm themselves. Switzerland not only has solid gun traditions, but I believe it has retained military conscription for the able-bodied, which would train young men in the responsible use of guns. It’s an admirable society built to survive. If a society has to choose between designing itself for empire or survival, I’ve always preferred the latter design.

Iceland is another frequently referenced. It protects gun rights, but it has low violence.

Hopefully the US right-wing can successfully win more converts to the gun-rights position, or just have more babies. And immigration isn’t the only issue; the schools preach Blue State values. Nevertheless, there is a growing right-wing presence on the Internet. If children can but be exposed to civilised values, to be aware of the existence of alternative, more complete ideas and arguments; then the momentum might finally turn in “our” favour. It’s noteworthy how so many secular humanists declare “educating” the world as the solution to so many of its ills.

New York Times Runs Front Page Editorial for Gun Control

Certain kinds of weapons, like the slightly modified combat rifles used in California, and certain kinds of ammunition, must be outlawed for civilian ownership. It is possible to define those guns in a clear and effective way and, yes, it would require Americans who own those kinds of weapons to give them up for the good of their fellow citizens. – New York Times

Ummm… yeah, good luck with that.
